Arizona's Hottest Summer on Record Left Valley Pools Damaged, Scottsdale Pool Experts Say
Scottsdale, United States - October 15, 2026 / Optimal Pool Care /
Arizona just came through its hottest summer on record, and Valley homeowners are now finding the damage in their backyards. Scottsdale-based Optimal Pool Care says repair and cleanup calls have climbed since August, led by failed pumps, algae-filled pools and scaled or cracked surfaces.
The heat came early and stayed late. Phoenix reached 100 degrees on March 18, the earliest in 20 years, and set a daily record of 114 degrees on August 25. Statewide, the summer ran 2.7 degrees hotter than normal.
What a Record Summer Does to a Pool
"Most homeowners think of a pool as something that sits there all summer. In reality, the pump, filter and water chemistry were working overtime for six straight months. By October, a lot of that equipment is worn out, and the damage usually doesn't show until something fails," said Santos Castro, owner of Optimal Pool Care.
Optimal Pool Care technicians say this summer's damage falls into three categories:
- Overworked equipment. Pumps run longer hours to keep hot water circulating and clean. Motors overheat, bearings wear and seals fail, often all at once in early fall.
- Algae and unbalanced water. Sun and heat burn off chlorine faster than many homeowners add it. A pool that misses a week or two of care can turn green within days.
- Surface and tile damage. Constant evaporation leaves calcium behind from the Valley's hard water. That builds scale on tile and plaster, while extreme temperature swings crack coping and loosen tile.
Five Signs Your Pool Took Heat Damage
Optimal Pool Care recommends homeowners check for these warning signs this fall:
- The pump sounds different. Grinding, loud humming or a pump that trips the breaker usually means a worn motor or bearings.
- The water won't stay clear. Cloudy or green water that returns days after treatment points to a filter or circulation problem.
- A white crust at the waterline. Calcium scale on tile is easier and cheaper to remove before it hardens.
- Rough, stained or flaking plaster. Surfaces that feel like sandpaper may need an acid wash or resurfacing.
- Cracked coping or loose tile. Small gaps let water behind the tile and grow into larger repairs.
Fall Is the Time to Fix It
Optimal Pool Care recommends homeowners have their pump, filter, water chemistry and surfaces checked this fall, before small heat damage becomes a major repair next summer. The company provides weekly pool cleaning and full repair service across Scottsdale, Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler, with upfront written pricing before any work begins.
"Weekly service is the best protection against a summer like this one. When someone checks your chemistry, cleans your filter and listens to your pump every week, small problems get fixed before they turn into a $1,000-plus pump replacement," Castro said.
