Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN) is giving its tech-savvy, outdoorsy customers a new way to interact with their vehicles. Starting next week, Rivian owners can ditch their phones and use an Apple Watch to access key vehicle controls. The company announced on Thursday that it will launch a companion app for the Apple Watch as part of a broader update to its mobile app.
With this new integration, Rivian owners can perform essential tasks directly from their Apple Watch. These include locking and unlocking doors, venting windows, and even triggering the vehicle alarm. To make the experience even more user-friendly, Rivian has added precise and customizable features. For example, users can adjust the digital crown on the watch to set a target state of charge or fine-tune the vehicle’s interior temperature. Additionally, the app allows users to select four quick controls based on their most-used functions.
However, there are some differences in functionality depending on the vehicle model. First-generation R1T trucks and R1S SUVs require owners to open the app and tap the lock icon on the watch to lock or unlock the vehicle. In contrast, second-generation R1 vehicles offer a more seamless experience, unlocking automatically as the driver approaches—provided a digital key has been set up.
This Apple Watch integration is part of a larger update to Rivian’s vehicle software system, which rolled out on Thursday. The update includes several performance and accessibility improvements. For instance, Rivian introduced a new “kneel mode” that lowers the vehicle an additional inch below its previous low setting, making it easier to load and unload. Drivers can now also switch between different drive modes without disengaging the advanced driver assistance system, enhancing convenience on the road.
Rivian didn’t stop there. The update also features a cold weather indicator, which adds a blue tint to the battery graphic on the vehicle’s digital screen. This visual cue helps drivers understand how much energy the battery is using for warming in colder conditions.
Beyond its vehicles, Rivian continues to position software as a core part of its business strategy. In 2024, the company partnered with Volkswagen to establish a $5.8 billion technology joint venture. Under this agreement, Volkswagen will invest in Rivian through 2027, contingent on achieving specific milestones. The software developed through this partnership will power future VW Group vehicles, further solidifying Rivian’s reputation as a leader in EV technology.
With these updates, Rivian is not only enhancing the driving experience for its customers but also reinforcing its commitment to innovation in both hardware and software. As the company continues to evolve, it’s clear that technology remains at the heart of its mission.
