EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – If you live on Edisto Island, chances are you know Ms. Annie Mack, an island icon.

So, when the 81-year-old needed help, there was no shortage of people answering the call.

It was a busy day on Indigo Hill Road. Brian Poteat’s crew from 843 Roof, along with others, is volunteering their time to put a roof on Ms. Mack’s home.

“She has had a ton of issues over the past few years with her roof leaking, and she’s on a fixed income. She couldn’t afford to get it done,” Poteat explained.

The timing couldn’t have been better, as some tarps on the worn-out roof were the only thing keeping Ms. Mack dry.

And as this is a small community, people got together to help their friend.

“Word just got around that her roof was in pretty poor condition, so we pulled some strings and we got all the materials and labor donated to get her roof done,” Poteat said.

A job like this, you’re looking at over $15,000 easy, which is not something Ms. Mack could afford on social security and retirement.

“Seeing people that can’t afford to do something to this magnitude, like $15,000, is a lot of money for most people,” Poteat said. “When we really see somebody in need and figure out a way that we can actually help them, I love doing that.”

And I was fortunate enough to be there when Ms. Mack returned home, saying she is blessed to have so many people looking out for her.

“I’m so thankful, good Lord, I’m thankful for this,” Ms. Mack said.

A new roof, indeed, and here is the finished product. Her home is a home once again, thanks to the generosity, caring, and hard work of others.

Good news gets even better. Poteat tells me that new gutters will be installed inside the home, and he may even get the outside painted.

A job well done.
